I have used gamification or game elements in various ways to increase engagement and enhance learning.

Example 1: Escape Room — The following is an example of gamification using an escape room concept to train on the topic of travel safety. It includes a character and storytelling elements along with puzzles and challenges that must be completed in order to collect clues, move from room to room, and eventually escape. This type of gamification can be adapted for any topic with information or resources provided in each room along with quizzes, puzzles, or challenges to complete to reinforce or assess the learning.

Example 2: Security Course —In this next example, I designed a security compliance course and developed it into an interactive gameboard featuring a villain named Arlo. The learner is tasked with preventing Arlo from breaking through the organization’s wall of security. In the process, the learner acquires the knowledge and skills needed to explain security requirements, apply proper security procedures, and describe actions to prevent security incidents from occurring. This course also included a heads-up display (HUD) to track points and an option for learners to choose their desired difficulty level.
